DIY // A Mantel Makeover

Our fireplace and mantel were first decorated when we got married 9 years ago. Nine whole years. And I haven't changed a thing. Until now.

Very, very sad. You see?

I made a burlap canvas family silhouette for our mantel a month ago, and that gave me the push to redo the rest. With a new quest to lighten and brighten our family room, I'm really loving the new-and-improved look!

For the banner, I bought a pack of chalkboard banner papers from Michael's. Printed off the letters of our name with Algerian font in size 400 from Word. Traced the letters with a pencil and then went over the letters with a chalk marker. Voila! (A more detailed tutorial is found here.)

Makes the marble fireplace surround (that we've never really liked) not look so bad after all. It's our new favorite spot in the family room for sure.
